The Washington Capitals have begun what is expected to be a busy summer of contract negotiations by signing potential restricted free agent James Black to a two-year deal plus an option year.
General manager George McPhee confirmed yesterday that the team had re-signed the wing to a one-way contract, meaning he will be paid at the NHL level even if he is sent to a minor league team. Black will be paid $650,000 this season and $700,000 next season, plus incentive bonuses.
Black, who will be 30 in August, played 75 games last season for Washington after the Caps picked him up from the Chicago Blackhawks early in the year. He hit career highs across the board, in games played, goals (16), assists (14), points (30) and game-winning goals (three). The latter tied him for second on the team.
Black's signing leaves the club with 11 players who become restricted free agents July 1. Among them are forwards Benoit Gratton, Chris Simon, Yogi Svejkovsky, Jeff Toms and Richard Zednik.
