The Washington Capitals re-signed restricted free agent center Jan Bulis yesterday to a three-year deal. The Capitals are still negotiating with restricted free agents Chris Simon and Sergei Gonchar, but progress has been slow with both.
Bulis, a 22-year-old who was the 43rd overall pick in 1996, still is recovering from a dislocated shoulder he suffered in February and is not expected to begin practicing with the Capitals until October at the earliest. Bulis will earn $650,000 this season, $675,000 in 2001-02 and $750,000 in 2002-03. Last season, Bulis appeared in 56 games, setting career highs by scoring nine goals and 31 points. The Capitals hope Bulis will become a more consistent offensive threat this season; he is considered one of the club's brightest young prospects.
"Bulis is a talented player who brings speed and offense," General Manager George McPhee said. "It's now time for him to push through the next threshold."
Bulis will face tough competition with veteran Adam Oates entrenched as the top center. Bulis was the No. 2 center until his injury, but Jeff Halpern thrived when he was granted more ice time with Bulis out. Kris Beech, the Capitals' 19-year-old phenom, also is expected to crack the NHL roster. Andrei Nikolishin will likely serve as a checking center this season.
