The Washington Capitals won the Prince of Wales Trophy as the 1997-98 Eastern Conference Champions!

The Capitals begin the 1998-99 season defending their Eastern Conference Championship. They had a spectactular playoff run before falling to the Detroit Red Wings on June 16, 1998. Ron Wilson capitalized on an impressive 40-30-10 regular season record to finish 4th in the Conference and marched through the best of the Eastern Conference - including promising young Boston and Ottawa seasons as well as 1998's hottest goalie - Dominik Hasek. The Capitals wasted no time in the pre-season, compiling a 6-2-0 record - beating rivals new and old - Pittsburgh, Nashville, Philadelphia, Buffalo, and Detroit.

General Manager George McPhee (seen below) spent a busy summer signing free agents Joe Juneau, Dale Hunter, Brian Bellows, and Dmitri Mironov, to name a few.
