WASHINGTON - Washington signed veteran right wing Ulf Dahlen to a one-year contract worth $1.65 million, Capitals general manager George McPhee announced Friday.

Dahlen, 34, has spent the last two years of his 12-year NHL career with the Capitals and has been an important contributor to Washington's back-to-back Southeast Division titles.

This past season he finished fourth on the team in scoring with 48 points (15 goals, 33 assists), his most productive offensive season since 1993-94. He tied for fifth on the team in scoring in 1999-00 with 38 points (15 goals, 23 assists).

In two years with Washington, the 6-foot-2, 199-pound Ostersund, Sweden, native has totaled 30 goals and 56 assists (86 points) in 148 games, while finishing with a plus-11 rating both years.

Dahlen joined the Capitals as a free agent July 21, 1999, after playing two seasons in Sweden. In 12 years of NHL experience with the New York Rangers, Minnesota and Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks and the Capitals, Dahlen has 566 points (261 goals, 305 assists) in 834 games.
